The Mazda Blenheim Triathlon

In front of friends, family and fans, yesterday (Sun 8th June) Stuart became The Mazada Blenheim Triathlon Champion. Stuart had a fantastic race, proving the good form he is in. Stuart is delighted with his win and said "this is a great race to win, I'm really happy with how my training is going. My coach and I (Michelle Dillon - teamdilloncoaching.com) have been working really hard to get things right. I'm now looking forward to flying to the States tomorrow to prepare for the ITU World Cup race Des Moines. If last years race is anything to go by, it's going to be a tough race. The hot and humid conditions are testing and with a large cheque and a Hummer waiting at the end for the Winner, it's going to be fast!!".
The Mazada Blenheim Triathlon will be televised on Channel 4 in the next few weeks.
Olympic Trials in Madrid

It was one of those days on Sunday 25th May at the ITU World Cup in Madrid, where luck didn't strike for Stuart. After a great swim, where Stuart exited the water in 3rd place, Stu sat comfortably in the lead pack on the bike. The athletes were challenged with all sorts of weather. At one stage they battled with torrential rain and thunder storms. This didn't help the leaner athletes as they could not stay warm and one by one athletes had to pull the pin. On the 4th lap of the bike Stu had a rear wheel puncture and borrowed a wheel from another competitor who had already retired from the race. Stuart lost 2 mins in the change over and continued to chase hard to catch the pack, when he realised that he had another puncture, this time in the front wheel. This time too far away from the wheel stop, Stuart had to ride on his rims before taking the decision to retire from the race with extreme disappointment. Stuart said "I was really disappointed to have gone out of this race this way. I came into the race in the best form of my career and was having a great day out there, feeling on top of everything, before the punctures came. Although I am disappointed right now, I know it will make me more determined later on in the season to do something else. So now I have to make another race my Olympic Games". After re-evaluating his plans, Stu now focuses on Des Moines ITU World Cup and some of the non drafting races in the USA as well as some domestic races, like his good old favourite - The London Triathlon.
So Beijing wasn't to be, but whose to say we won't see Stu on home soil at the games in 2012!

Another strong performance from Stuart at New Plymouth World Cup

Stuart finished 9th this weekend in a fast and furious race at the New Plymouth World Cup. Stu had an average swim for him, but managed to gain a minutes lead off the bike with a group that did not include the two pre race favourites, Gomez and Brad K. With the running getting faster at every race , the two favourites didn't take long to mow down the leaders very quickly. By the 4km mark Gomez had hit the lead. Stu hung on well, running in 7th position for most of the way, he got caught by two athletes at the line and ended up with a respectable 9th.
Stuart now goes away to prepare for the British Olympic Selection race - Madrid World Cup on Sunday 25th May, he also has a French Grand Prix race the week before, which will be his next race....
Stuart returns to the UK very shortly.... I hope he's prepared for the very cold spring weather!

Mooloolaba ITU World Cup
Wow I was amazed at the level already at the first ITU World Cup of the season in Mooloolaba at the weekend. With it being an Olympic year the bar is being raised yet again.
The pace was on from the gun as we ran into the sea from a beach start. I had a good start but I made a mistake on the side I started on as I found myself amongst the madness at the first buoy. I exited the water in the first half of the field and had a great transition. I then worked hard at the beginning of the bike to get myself into the first bike pack. It wasn't long before all the packs emerged into one and we were then one big pack barring a few stragglers.
It was chaotic coming into transition but I managed to get out fast, running up the first hill in the lead group which included the eventual winner Xavier Gomez and consistent World Cup podium finisher Brad K. I was having a strong run and hung in for a solid 12th place, which is the best start I have had to the season in a long time. For me this means there should be a lot more to come. I'm pleased with the way I raced and am looking forward to another good performance this weekend in New Zealand at the ITU WC New Plymouth. I'm hoping I can get closer to the podium this weekend. I will keep you posted.
